| | | | Creator: | Swiss Society | | | | Dates: | 1872-1970 | | | | Abstract: | The Swiss Society was created in 1872 as the Schweizerischen Unterstuetzungs Verein by a group of members from the Swiss male chorus, then known as the Schweizer Gesang Verein Gruetli Bund, in Cleveland, Ohio. A mutual aid society for those of Swiss descent, the Swiss Society provided not only insurance to members, but also sought to preserve and nurture the German-Swiss culture, language, and literature. In 1873, the Swiss Society affiliated itself as a branch society with the Gruetli Bund der Vereinigten Staaten von Nord Amerika, which later became the North American Swiss Alliance. In 1881, the Society reorganized as the Schweizer Verein von Cleveland, Ohio. In 1885, the Swiss Society in Cleveland was elected as the executive society for the North American Swiss Alliance. By 1942, the group officially adopted the English name of Swiss Society and was still in operation in 1994. The Swiss Ladies Aid Society was closely associated with the Swiss Society and was originally known as the Schweizer Frauen Unterstuetzungs Verein. It was founded in 1887 in order to support women who were Swiss born, of Swiss descent or married to a Swiss man, and to provide health insurance, comradery, and promote efforts to maintain the German-Swiss language. Eventually the Ladies Aid Society also became an affiliate of the North American Swiss Alliance. The collection consists of minutes, financial records, and member policies. | | | | Creator: | Moresky, Lana | | | | Dates: | 1952-1988 | | | | Abstract: | Lana Moresky is a women's rights activist and officer of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection includes personal files, consisting of resumes, calendars, correspondence, speeches and files re: fundraising and public relations; NOW files, consisting of local chapter files, Ohio NOW files, national NOW files, NOW ERA campaign files (hearings, press clippings and state campaign notebooks), and NOW publications; and, files pertaining to general women's issues, and events and organizations (such as abortion, day care, education, employment, International Women's Year, the Twenty-Second District Caucus, the Democratic National Conventions of 1980 and 1984).
